For recycling large or massive parts, it is technically and energetically usefull to do it in two steps. In the first step, the parts are pre-crushed using shredder to a fraction size of several cm. This kind of regrind (big flakes) are not suitable for direct further processing, so in the second phase, knife mills come into play, which further process the coarse crumb into a fraction in the order of units of mm. Subsequent reprocessing with other technologies is already problem-free.
